First Choice Closets

Custom closets, wardrobes, garage systems and built-in storage for Old Bridge Township homes — from the waterfront streets of Laurence Harbor to the postwar neighborhoods inland and the newer developments off Route 9.

We are an Old Bridge closet company in the practical sense: design, manufacture and installation handled by one team. Whether it is a full closet remodel, a straight closet installation in a room that was never fitted out properly, or a complete closet system for a new primary suite, we measure it, build it and fit it ourselves.

Old Bridge is one of the larger townships in Middlesex County, and it does not have a single housing type. A bayfront ranch in Laurence Harbor, a split-level off Old Bridge Matawan Road and a two-bedroom condo in Cheesequake Village are three different design problems. We measure every space before proposing anything, which is the only reliable way to handle that much variation.

Storage Near the Bay: What Changes Close to the Water

Laurence Harbor, Cliffwood Beach and the streets running down toward Old Bridge Waterfront Park sit close enough to Raritan Bay that humidity is a genuine design consideration rather than a footnote. It affects two things: what the system is made of, and how it is ventilated.

Material choice matters more here

Our systems are built from polyester-wrapped MDF panels rather than raw timber. The wrapped surface does not absorb ambient moisture the way an unfinished or oiled wood shelf will, which matters in a bayside house that swings between damp summers and dry heated winters. Solid wood in that environment moves, and a drawer that runs sweetly in February can bind in August.

Ventilation and enclosed storage

Fully sealed cabinetry in a damp room traps air. In coastal Old Bridge homes we tend to mix closed storage with open shelving and leave deliberate air gaps at the back rather than boxing everything in tight to the wall. It is a small detail that makes a real difference to how clothing smells after a stored season.

Seasonal gear is the other half of the job

Households near the water accumulate things households inland do not: beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, kayaks and paddles, fishing tackle, wetsuits. Most of it is bulky, most of it is used four months a year, and most of it ends up in the garage in a pile. Overhead racks and dedicated vertical storage in a garage system is usually the highest-impact project in these homes — more so than any bedroom closet.

Old Bridge Housing Types and What Each One Needs

Laurence Harbor ranches, bungalows and foursquares

The shoreline pockets are classic postwar suburb: mid-century bungalows and ranches with some cape cods, foursquares and raised waterfront homes. Single-level living with small original closets and, in many cases, no basement. That combination puts all the pressure on bedroom closets and the garage. Full-height fitted storage in the bedrooms and a proper garage system usually solves it without an addition.

Inland split-levels and larger suburban homes

South of the Parkway and off Old Bridge Matawan Road the houses get bigger — split-levels on broad lots, larger suburban styles with two-car garages. Split-levels have a particular quirk: the closets on half-landings and in the lower level are often oddly proportioned, deep but narrow or wide but shallow. Fitted systems built to the actual dimensions recover a surprising amount of that space.

Cheesequake Village and the 55-plus communities

Two-bedroom condo layouts with in-unit laundry competing for the same square footage. The workable approach is height and drawers: cabinetry that runs to the ceiling, drawers rather than deep shelves so nothing disappears at the back, and a clear separation between what is needed weekly and what is stored. Where a move is still being planned, we design first, because knowing what fits changes what comes along.

Commuter households

Old Bridge sits on the Garden State Parkway and Route 9 corridors, and a large share of the township commutes to New York or Jersey City. Two practical consequences: professional wardrobes need proper hanging and visibility rather than a crammed rod, and the spare room that became a home office during the week needs storage that lets it stay presentable. Both are routine projects for us.

Door Styles and Finishes

Every system is finished to your choice of door profile and color. We work with polyester-wrapped MDF moldings and MDF center panels in finishes from Tafisa, Uniboard and American Laminates — eleven distinct door profiles, each available in a wide range of colors, with matching accessory moldings. Corner joints are built with mortise and tenon joinery.

Why Old Bridge Homeowners Work With Us

We design, manufacture and install — no subcontractors, and one point of contact from the first visit to the final walkthrough. Most installations finish in a single day.

We are based in Manalapan, about twenty minutes from most of Old Bridge, and licensed in New Jersey under License No. 13VN14029700. Close enough that scheduling is straightforward and any small adjustment afterwards is a short trip rather than a return visit that has to be planned around. More about our team →

How the Process Works

You see the finished design before anything is built. A designer visits your Old Bridge home, measures the space and asks how you use it. We review finishes, door profiles and hardware together, share costs as the design develops, then produce a 3D rendering for you to approve. Once approved, your system is fabricated to those measurements and installed by our team, finishing with a walkthrough.

Old Bridge Custom Closet FAQs

Do you serve Old Bridge even though you're in Monmouth County?

Yes. Old Bridge is roughly twenty minutes from our Manalapan office and is a regular service area for us, along with Matawan, Aberdeen and Sayreville.

I'm close to the bay. Will humidity affect a custom closet?

It is worth designing around. We build with polyester-wrapped MDF panels rather than raw timber, which is considerably more stable in a house that swings between damp summers and dry heated winters. We also plan ventilation into coastal installations rather than sealing everything tight to the wall.

Where do I put beach and boating gear?

The garage, properly fitted out. Overhead racks for kayaks and seasonal bulk, wall systems for chairs, umbrellas and tackle, and closed cabinetry for anything that should stay clean. In waterfront Old Bridge homes this is often the highest-impact project in the house.

My house has no basement. Does that change the design?

It concentrates everything into the closets, the garage and whatever hall storage exists, so those spaces have to work considerably harder. In practice it means going full height wherever possible and using drawers instead of deep shelving.

Do you charge for the consultation?

No. The in-home consultation, the measurements and the 3D design are free, with no obligation to proceed.

How long does installation take?

Most single-room installations are completed in one day. Larger projects such as a full garage system are scheduled over several days, with the schedule given in advance.
